Putting City Spending Under the Microscope

I was recently interviewed by Jeremy Jojola of Channel 4 about some purchases made by the city recently. While we at the Rio Grande Foundation are always concerned about government spending, Jojola’s findings were relatively small within the context of the overall city budget, the fight with public employees, and the potential for tax hikes to fund a convention center expansion. Rio Grande Foundation President Paul Gessing’s Remarks to New Mexico’s Environmental Improvement Board

On March 1, 2010, the unelected Environmental Improvement Board held a public comment session during which citizens were able to offer their comments to the Board on a proposal to limit carbon emissions in New Mexico to 25% below 1990 levels. Comments were limited to three minutes. I used my three minutes to demand recusal of three EIB members due to self-evident conflicts of interest.

Problems with New Mexico’s Bloated Government Bureaucracy and Costly Pensions

Economist and Rio Grande Foundation scholar Scott Moody came to New Mexico to discuss his findings with legislators, media outlets, and candidates for office. On January 12, in Albuquerque, Moody presented his findings to an audience of citizens and legislators in Albuquerque. Watch the video here:

On Wednesday, December 9, the Rio Grande Foundation hosted a candidate forum to which each of the five currently-declared candidates was invited. Only two, Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones and Doug Turner participated while the Weh campaign was represented in the opening session by Whitney Cheshire. Video of the forum is below:

Liberty in Concert

On December 2nd, the Rio Grande Foundation hosted a unique event called “Liberty in Concert” with Jamie Story who is president of theGrassroot Institute in Hawaii and a former Miss Texas. The event included a brief classical concert and talk about her work for our sister think tank the Texas Public Policy Foundation and in the liberty movement.

RGF President Paul Gessing Discusses Albuquerque Transportation Tax

Albuquerque voters are voting now to decide whether or not to extend a 1/4 cent transportation tax. RGF President Paul Gessing was interviewed for a segment on Channel 13’s news broadcast on the fact that the tax has no expiration date and that voters would benefit from seeing $35 million in their pockets rather than being used by local government.
